Joel has been hunting nearly his entire life, but his focus has been drawn to traditional archery and watching the mystical flight of a well shot arrow. He has dealt with target panic since he picked up his first recurve 30 years ago and has struggled with this demon just like countless other archers. Through his unique firearms training opportunities, Joel he found and developed the mental mechanics of shooting for both firearms and archery. In addition to his considerable background in shot instruction he is also a two time Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Professional Division World Elk Calling Champion and has been in the top four callers in the world since 2006. With those credentials, he has had the opportunity to hunt throughout the West and pass along his knowledge of elk behavior to scores of elk hunters.

In this episode Joel and I discuss:

  • Elk
  • Calling Elk
  • Most important calls to know
  • Setting up for calling elk.
  • How to use a diaphragm call.
  • And much more…

With a shared passion and love of the outdoors, Kristy is honored to host NRA News I Am Forever Television Show, serve as an ambassador for Cabela's, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, RMEF's Team Elk Television Show, Swarovski Optik, Buck Knives, Montana Silversmiths, and Wilderness Athlete. Her greatest hope is to inspire others, giving them the confidence to tackle the most demanding outdoor activities.

Kristy was raised leading a pack string of mules into the backcountry of Oregon, experiencing the thrill of public land, fair chase, do it yourself hunting. She believes that life's lessons are best learned in the field with family and friends by your side, helping to develop sound personal character and values. The time she spent in the backcountry as a kid with her family created the entire core of who she is.

Kristy's father taught her that there was no such thing as a goal or dream that was too big to make into a reality. Learning the value of setting goals and creating her own success started with small moments in the field; as a kid learning to handle, ride and pack mules, learning to call elk, strategize in the field and ultimately gaining the skills to hunt solo on public land.

Over the past few years, Kristy has been blessed with the opportunity to hunt around the world, from the frozen Canadian tundra to the Bushveld Savanna of Africa. Climbing some of the steepest, roughest mountains in the world, enduring the most severe weather conditions, pushing her mind and body to the limits, digging deep, and giving each hunt everything that she has motivates her to continuously look for ways to gain the advantage over the next hunter and the prey that she seeks.

Kristy is passionate about the support of wildlife and habitat conservation, as well as outdoor education. She is a featured member of RMEF's Team Elk television show airing on the Outdoor Channel and actively volunteers supporting local RMEF chapter events and youth hunts around the country.

As an NRA Basic Pistol and Refuse To Be A Victim Certified Instructor, she is a contributor to NRA Women Tips & Tactics presented by Cabela's and is Host of the I Am Forever Series.

She has teamed up with Shoot Like A Girl, helping to empower women to take up shooting sports in a safe, controlled environment helping to ensure the continuation of our hunting and shooting sports heritage.

As part of the Wilderness Athlete Pro Staff, she knows there is nothing more powerful than proper nutrition and hard training. Spending countless hours training in the gym, running trails, training in precision marksmanship and archery, refining her elk-calling skills and preseason scouting gives her the advantage in the backcountry.

As a Certified Clinical Sports Nutrition and Exercise INTRAFITT technical representative and an NPC figure competitor, she shares her passion for fitness and nutrition as editor for Western Hunter, Elk Hunter and North American Hunter Magazines.

Over the past several years, Kristy has been blessed with personally witnessing miracles while volunteering on the mountain with participants in the Wounded Warrior Outdoors, Adventures Enabled Program.

WWO provides therapeutic adventures for active duty servicemen and women as referred by military hospitals; some injuries are evident, some are invisible.

In the past, Kristy served on her local Safari Club International Board Of Directors, later moving on to become Vice-President and then President of the High Desert Chapter, ultimately leading her to Washington D.C. to lobby members of Congress for legislation and policies to improve hunting and conservation.

By sharing her adventures and love of the outdoors, Kristy's greatest hope is to inspire others, giving them the confidence to tackle the most demanding outdoor activities.

In this show we cover:

  • ELK
    • How to fill your tag quicker.
    • Pre-season scouting
    • Elk calling
    • Elk hunting strategy
  • Horses in the back country
    • The do’s and don’ts of your horse venture.

Here we are in Episode 1 with Brian Barney. Brian is a successful blue collar western bowhunter.  He got his start by doing “do it yourself” adventure hunts in nearly every western state and finding a way to be successful.  He now has a writing position at Eastmans where he writes next level tips and tactics articles for both EBJ and EHJ magazines.  He spends over 100 days a year archery hunting nearly every western big game animal including mule deer, elk, antelope, bear, moose, caribou and mountain goats.  He has multiple Pope & Young trophies to his credit and has a knack for harvesting big critters.

In this episode we cover:

  • Sponsors, pro staff, and monetizing your passion for archery and hunting.
  • Hand placement on the bow.
  • 3rd axis adjustment.
